Stuttgart/Singapore. Ten years after its market launch, the Porsche Macan welcomes its second generation of models, which this time are all-electric. Thanks to their progressive, timeless design, characteristic Porsche performance, long range and exceptional everyday practicality, the new Macan 4 and the new Macan Turbo are expected to fully satisfy the demands of Porsche customers who choose an SUV. “The Macan moves to a completely new level – with outstanding electric performance, the new Porsche Driver Experience technology and very impressive design,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, on the occasion of the world premiere in Singapore.

“With the all-electric Macan our aim is to offer the sportiest model in its class,” explains Jörg Kerner, Vice President of the Macan Product Line. Porsche exclusively uses the latest generation of PSM permanent magnet motors on the front and rear axles for exceptional efficiency and absolute stability in power delivery. The numbers speak for themselves about the top electric performance: combined with the Launch Control system, the Macan 4 delivers overboost power of up to 300 kW (408 hp), while the Macan Turbo impresses with up to 470 kW (639 hp). Maximum torque is 650 and 1,130 Nm respectively, ensuring outstanding driving performance. The Macan 4 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, while the Macan Turbo does so in just 3.3 seconds. The top speeds of the two models are 220 and 260 km/h respectively.

New Premium Platform Electric technology with 800 V architecture

The electric motors are powered by a lithium-ion battery in the underbody, with a gross capacity of 100 kWh, of which up to 95 kWh can be actively used. The high-voltage battery is a central element of the innovative Premium Platform Electric (PPE) technology with 800 V architecture, which Porsche uses for the first time in the new Macan. DC charging power reaches 270 kW, with the battery charging from 10 to 80% in around 21 minutes at a suitable fast-charging station. At 400 V stations, a high-voltage switch inside the battery enables “bank charging” by splitting the 800 V battery into two batteries, each with a nominal voltage of 400 V. This achieves highly efficient charging, at up to 135 kW, without the need for an additional high-voltage booster. Home AC charging reaches 11 kW.

Energy recovery from the electric motors reaches up to 240 kW while driving. The Integrated Power Box (IPB) further improves the efficiency of the new Macan models, while at the same time reducing weight and saving space. The innovative, compact IPB system combines three components – the on-board AC charger, the high-voltage heater and the DC/DC converter. The combined WLTP range reaches 613 km for the Macan 4 and 591 km for the Macan Turbo.

Sporty proportions with the design lines of a coupé

Thanks to its more pronounced proportions and Porsche design DNA, the new Macan impresses with its dynamic and imposing appearance. “With the all-electric Macan, an already established Porsche product becomes electric,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President of Style Porsche. “The new Macan is clearly recognisable as a member of the Porsche product family. The classic Porsche proportions have evolved even further to adapt in the best possible way to the challenges of an electric vehicle. This further emphasises the sporty, modern and dynamic appearance of the Macan. After all, its design leaves no doubt: the Macan remains the sportiest car in its class, even in electric form.”

The gently sloping bonnet and the strong lines of the wings give the base version of the SUV, with a length of 4,784 mm, a width of 1,938 mm and a height of 1,622 mm, a dynamic appearance even when stationary. The new Macan is available with wheels of up to 22’’ with tyres of different sizes at the front and rear. The wheelbase, 86 mm longer than on the previous model (2,893 mm), is offset by shorter front and rear overhangs. The headlights are split in two parts: the flat upper light unit with four-point daytime running lights is integrated into the wings and highlights the width of the car, while the central headlight unit with optional Matrix LED technology is positioned slightly lower at the front of the vehicle. The characteristic Porsche aerodynamic line “fades” harmoniously into the flat rear window. Combined with the frameless doors and the characteristic side sections, the end result is a car with an exceptionally elegant, sporty design. The car's shoulders are accentuated, giving the rear an impressively “muscular” appearance. The Porsche logo is now positioned centrally at the rear with iconic 3D lighting.

Active and passive aerodynamic elements for greater range

Porsche combines its design DNA with aerodynamic elements specifically optimised for greater range. Thanks to Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) technology with active and passive aerodynamic elements and a drag coefficient of 0.25, the new Macan is one of the most aerodynamic SUVs on the market – with a positive impact on range and energy consumption. The PAA system includes the active rear spoiler, the active cooling flaps in the front air intakes and the flexible covers on the fully sealed underbody. The air ducts beneath the headlight unit, combined with the lowered front end, improve airflow. At the rear, the refined edges and the diffuser with fins guarantee improved aerodynamics.

Two luggage compartments and more interior space

The new Macan is a performance-oriented SUV with exceptional everyday practicality, top-quality equipment and a spacious layout. With the transition to electric drive, more luggage space was freed up inside the Macan. Depending on the model and the installed equipment, the capacity behind the single rear seat reaches 540 l (cargo configuration). In addition, there is a second luggage compartment at the front, with a capacity of 84 l. In total, 127 l of luggage space is added compared with the previous model. When the rear seat backs are folded completely down, the capacity of the rear luggage compartment can reach 1,348 l. The Macan's exceptionally practical design is complemented by a maximum towing capacity of up to 2,000 kg.

Depending on the model and the installed equipment, the driver's and front passenger's seats have been lowered by 28 mm compared with the past, while the rear passengers sit 15 mm lower, enjoying more legroom. The interior is unmistakably Porsche: the wide cockpit is emphasised by the integrated black dashboard, while the centre console has been designed with an upward slope to enhance the feeling of the driver's low, performance-focused position in the vehicle. At the same time, the large windows create a brighter and airier interior. In addition to the modern digital user interface, selected analogue controls have also been fitted – for example, on the air vents and on the air-conditioning controls. An LED light strip is integrated into the cleverly designed trim strip of the cockpit and doors, which serves as ambient lighting but also as communication lighting. Depending on the conditions, it informs or warns – indicating greetings, charging processes or the functions of the driver assistance systems. The equipment of the new Macan offers a wide range of customisation options.

Porsche also aims to use more environmentally friendly materials in its cars. Thus, selected elements in the interior of the all-electric Macan are made from such materials.

Driving experience: advanced computing power and connectivity

The Macan features a state-of-the-art visual display system and operating design with up to three screens, including the independent curved 12.6’’ instrument cluster and the central 10.9’’ screen. For the first time, the front passenger can now view information, adjust infotainment system settings or stream video on their own optional 10.9’’ screen while the car is moving. For the first time, Porsche Driver Experience technology also includes a head-up display on the windscreen with augmented reality technology. Virtual elements, such as navigation arrows, are visually integrated into the real world in perfect harmony. The image is displayed to the driver at a distance of 10 m and corresponds to the size of an 87-inch screen.

The new-generation infotainment system uses the Android Automotive operating system. At the same time, the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system of the new Macan raises the bar in computing performance. For example, the “Hey Porsche” voice assistant suggests routes, as well as charging stops, at lightning speed. Through the new Porsche App Centre, passengers can have direct access to popular third-party apps and install them directly in the new Macan.

The first Macan with rear-axle steering and two-valve dampers

Porsche designed the Macan focusing on the “quintessence” of Porsche driving dynamics characteristics as well as on a distinctive steering feel. “Thanks to the particularly sporty seating position, the low centre of gravity, and the impressive dynamic driving characteristics and precision of the steering system, the new Macan offers the true driving feel of a sports car,” explains the Vice President of the Product Line, Jörg Kerner.

Both the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo have all-wheel drive. The two electric motors are controlled through the electronic power system in near real time. The electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) system works almost five times faster than a conventional all-wheel-drive system and responds to slip within 10 milliseconds. In addition, the distribution of the all-wheel drive is controlled by the selected driving programme. The Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) torque distribution system, an electronically controlled locking differential on the rear axle, assists traction, driving stability and lateral dynamics of the Macan Turbo.

Macan models with air suspension – included as standard on the Turbo – feature the electronic Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system, which can also optionally be combined with steel-spring suspension. The PASM system also features dampers with two-valve technology. The wider-ranging damper layout guarantees greater comfort as well as improved performance. As a result, the differences between the driving programmes become even easier to perceive.

For the first time, the Macan offers optional rear-axle steering, with a maximum steering angle of five degrees. This system allows a small turning circle of 11.1 m in the city and when manoeuvring, while at the same time providing exceptional driving stability at higher speeds, assisted by the front-axle steering system with the guaranteed consistency and precision of a Porsche.

Since 2014, Porsche has delivered more than 800,000 Macan models worldwide. This great success will undoubtedly continue with its all-electric successor, which is produced with net-neutral carbon emissions at the Porsche plant in Leipzig. The new models are expected to be delivered to the first customers in the second half of the year. Prices, including VAT and country-specific equipment, start in Germany at €83,993 for the Macan 4 and €114,576 for the Macan Turbo.
